Help cries ignored

Friday, July 30, 2010

Two middle-aged women are struggling to recover from the physical and emotional trauma of being bashed in a sunny suburban Echuca street on Sunday afternoon.

One of the women sought medical attention for injuries sustained when she was repeatedly punched, while her sister is sporting a bruised eye.

The victims are disappointed no-one responded to their cries for help during what they described as a vicious and totally unprovoked attack.

One of the women said the pair was walking along Shackell St enjoying the sunshine at 3.15pm when a woman came out of a house shouting abuse at them.

She said they continued walking but when the woman came after them, she began to run away.

She turned back when the woman grabbed her sister by the hair on the back of her head and threw her to the ground, continuing to punch her in the face.

In the struggle, she was struck in the face herself.

``I screamed and screamed and screamed for someone to come and help us but no-one came,'' the woman said.

``There were several cars in driveways in neighbouring houses and someone must have heard what was happening in their street.

``I would not expect a woman to come and help us but maybe a guy.

``I appreciate that people are most likely too frightened to get involved in these situations but even a phone call to the police would have been very helpful but this did not happen either.''

The woman, who was struck in the face as she tried to help her sister, said she had heard of several similar incidents in Echuca-Moama and believed Sunday's assault was part of a serious, ongoing problem in the towns, with many assaults going unreported.

Police have been notified of the assault.
